Hardscape is the bone structure of your outdoor space. Done right, it sets the value of the rest of the work for the next two or three decades. Done wrong, it shifts, cracks, and pulls the rest of the landscape down with it.

Between us, that's over 25 years getting it right in Richmond clay, Richmond freeze-thaw cycles, and Richmond grades. Every patio, wall, and walkway we build starts with the base. The base is what fails. We don't cut it.

What we install

• Patios. Bluestone, paver, flagstone, brick. Sized to the house and the way you actually entertain.
• Retaining walls. Engineered for slope and drainage. Block, stone, or boulder.
• Walkways and steps. Front entries, side paths, garden access. Code-compliant rise and run.
• Fire pits and seat walls. Wood-burning or gas. Built into the patio plan, not bolted on after.
• Masonry detail. Stone veneer, columns, mailbox bases, garden walls.
• Outdoor kitchens and pergolas. Coordinated with hardscape, electrical, and gas in one scope.

How we build it

Excavation, compacted aggregate base, geotextile, polymeric sand, sealed joints. Drainage routed away from house and patio. Stone laid by people who've done it for years, not subs we met that morning. Every job is photographed at base, mid-build, and completion.

Ask anyone quoting you what is under it

The six inches nobody ever sees is the whole difference between a patio that settles and one that does not. Top to bottom, a patio built properly is five layers, and only one of them is the part you will ever look at.

• Compacted earth. Graded and sloped a quarter inch per foot for drainage before a single stone goes down. The slope is set in dirt, not in pavers.
• Crushed stone base. Four to six inches, compacted in two-inch lifts rather than all at once, each lift packed before the next goes on. This is the layer that decides how the patio looks at year fifteen.
• Bedding sand. One inch, screeded smooth with a straight edge. The pavers float on this, not on the stone. If this layer is wrong, every paver above it is wrong.
• Pavers. The only part of the build most people ever discuss.
• Edge restraint. Without it the outside row walks outward a little every winter and the joints open. It costs almost nothing and it is the most common thing missing on a patio that failed.

If you are collecting quotes, ask each one how deep the base goes and whether it is compacted in lifts. The answer tells you most of what you need to know about what you are actually buying, and it is a fair question to ask us too.
